A Message From The President

Welcome to our first monthly e-mail safety and informational newsletter. Every month you can expect to receive information that relates to material handling safety, service tips, and if you scroll down far enough, some other marketing information. Our intent
for this newsletter is to keep it brief, and to always include information that will be important to you; namely safety information. If all you do is read the first couple of sections each month, we believe you will gain from it. Everything else is just gravy.
If there are topics you would like to have addressed, please email me at dschneckenburger@thompsonandjohnson.com, or call me at 315-437-2881,
extension 122.

Thank you.
 Dave

ASME/ANSI Inspection and Repair of Forks

Forks in use shall be inspected at intervals of not more than 12 months (for single
shift operations) or whenever any defect or permanent deformation is detected.
Several applications will require more frequent inspection. (B56.1d-1993.6.2.8a)

The fork blade and shank shall be thoroughly checked for wear, special attention being paid to the vicinity of the heel. If the thickness is reduced to 90% of the original thick-ness, the fork shall not be returned to service. (6.2.8.1 2f)

How To Manually Release the Brake on a Crown Model WP2000 Electric Pallet Truck

When the battery is dead or the pallet truck is unable to electrically disengage the brake, the technician may have to release the brake to move the truck to a better location in order to charge or repair it. This brake is spring-applied and electrically released. The WP is designed so that when de-energized, the brake will be applied. Should it become necessary to move the truck while de-energized, the brake is equipped with two hex socket head screws that may be manually loosened to release the brake.

WARNING: Before returning truck to operation, be sure to return the brake release screws to their original position and check for proper braking function. Failure to return screws to their original position results in truck having no braking ability.

Lift Truck Forks Do Wear Out!

A fork with heel wear of 10% loses 20% of its rated capacity. That means that the safety factor for a pair of forks has also been reduced by 20%. In real world terms, a 5,000 lb.
lift truck with forks that have been worn by 10% can safely handle only a 4,000 lb. load.

ITA Recommended Practices recommends that the fork arm be withdrawn from service when the thickness of the blade is worn by 10%.

Call your local service representative for a free fork survey and general safety inspec-tion. There will be an 11% discount on any replacement forks ordered for a limited time only, so call now to make sure your equipment meets the safety requirements enforced by OSHA.
