OSHA
regulation 1910.178 (L)(i) states that the employer
shall ensure that each powered industrial truck operator
is competent to operate a powered industrial truck safely,
as demonstrated by the successful completion of training
course.
1910.178(L)(ii)
Training shall consist of a combination of
- Formal instruction (e.g., lecture, discussion, interactive
computer learning, videotape, and written material),
- Practical training (demonstrations performed by
the trainer and practical exercises performed by the
trainee), and
- Evaluation of the operator’s performance in the
workplace.
Regarding Hazard Communication or Right To Know, OSHA’s
purpose is to ensure that employers and employees know
about workplace hazards and how to protect themselves
so that the incidence of illnesses and injuries due
to hazardous chemicals is reduced.
OSHA
wants employers to keep a written training program on
file. This will ensure that all employers receive the
information they need to inform and train their employees.
Your required written training program must include
descriptions of container labeling, MSDS (Material Safety
Data Sheets) and documentation of employee training
for each workplace. Also keep a list of hazardous chemicals
that your company may use and to make information regarding
hazards and protective measures available to other employers
(such as contractors on your site) and your employees.
Your
training shall consist of how to read labels on chemical
products that you may carry in your workplace, understanding
hazardous labels, how to read MSDS sheets and how to
obtain and use available hazard information. This training
only needs to be done once with your employees unless
their job changes or the chemicals they use change.
Then you need to refresh your employees on these changes.
